How to Prevent Hearing Loss

Did you know that hearing loss affects 71% of over 70s in the UK? Unfortunately, when it comes to age-related or genetic hearing loss, there’s no way of reversing the problem.
When the tiny hair cells in your ears are damaged, they don’t regenerate or regrow, meaning that any loss is permanent.

  • Wear earplugs or headphones at concerts, especially if you bring young children — earplugs for music are designed to let the music in without damaging your hearing.

Limit exposure

  • At events with loud music, stand away from speakers.
  • If you can, take listening breaks to give your ears time to recover and limit the amount of damage.

Stay healthy

Healthy living isn’t a magical cure for hearing loss, but it can help prevent damage to your ears and improve your health. Regular exercise and food with all the right nutrients can put you on the path to protecting your health and your hearing.

Avoid certain medications

Some prescription and over-the-counter medications are ototoxic, meaning they can cause hearing loss or tinnitus. If you think a drug you’re taking might be causing hearing loss, talk to your doctor about your concerns and possible alternatives.

Manage existing conditions

Conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure can contribute to the damage of delicate mechanisms in the ear. Similarly, diabetes has been known to cause damage to cells in the inner ear. In fact, people with diabetes are twice as likely to experience hearing loss. If you have any of these conditions, make sure to follow your doctor’s orders to manage them properly.
